How to find out if any of your contacts are online?

How do i find new contacts without going to chatrooms?

  • i want to add new contacts to my list.How can i do it?i don,t want to go to chatrooms.i cannot see any other contacts other than my contacts on my messanger list.But they can see me when i am online.how does this happen?i never go to chatrooms,but poeple other than my contacts see me,but i cannot see any unless they send an IM to me.how do they do it?

    go to your messenger and when you sign in check the box that says sign in as invisible to everyone

It sounds like you have the box UNchecked on your profile settings that says "check this box to hide my online status from other users" and they are seeing you are online from other places on yahoo. There is also a setting in your messenger settings under the privacy tab that says "allow Yahoo! websites to show when I am online. Either of these boxes not being checked appropriately would allow people to see you if you are logged on to Yahoo! mail or games (and probably others). The only other thing I can think of is that they asked to add you and you allowed them to add you without adding them to your list. If you want to add these people that IM you, click the add button in your messenger window when you are chatting with them and it will send an invite. There are lots of other places on yahoo (and the rest of the web) where you can make contacts. Groups, message boards, Yahoo! games and other gaming sites. Hope this helps.
