Is Yahoo! Messenger (8.1) free?

Is Yahoo shutting down its FREE Messenger service?

  • I received this I.M and Yahoo message: "Yahoo is shutting down on November 17th. They want to get rid of free messenger. If you delete this and don't pass it on, your name will be deleted. A lot of people have already been deleted. Right click on the group name of your buddylist and click, Send Instant Message to All in Group.. This is Yahoo President Anna Rubenecia, I am sorry to announce that Yahoo has reached its maximum number of accounts two million. If you would like to keep your account for free send this to everyone on your list. This way we can know which accounts are being used and which accounts we can delete. Send this within 8 days and your account will remain free." This sounds like a scam. What do you think?

  • Answer:

I've personally talked with the Yahoo Messenger Service and it is NOT TRUE. It's all a hoax. They are not shutting their service. So disregard any messages regarding this issue. Mr. Jeff

This message has been going around yahoo since yahoo first began. Please don't pass this around because it's not true. Ignore those messages that say yahoo is closing, that yahoo who is going to start charging, that yahoo is running out of ID's. These are all SPAM and NOT TRUE.

It's an old hoax and scam. The same type of spam has also happened to MSN and AIM (AOL Messenger) as well. See the webpage below, it will show different versions all circulating since 1999. http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/im.asp
