Why does my webcam go straight too video call?

Problem with windows 7 and messenger 11, in webcam view mode (not video call)?

I have Windows 7, Messenger 11 installed. When in webcam view mode (not video call) when myself and one other user are viewing each others webcam, when I start to type an IM in the box, the webcam image I am viewing minimizes to the bottom bar. This is not in full-screen mode. How do I give and receive Instant Messaging whilst continuing to view the webcam image?

As far as I know, there's no setting to allow full-screen viewing while sending im's. It's as if the app "figures" once messages are being sent, the focus would shift to the messages more so than the images and when I think about it, it seems to make sense to me. Then again, I'm still using XP so this is one of those "intuitive" things we hear so much about when considering computers and our interactions with them. I hope this helps. ~m~
