What is a good universal messenger?

What is a really good Instant Message chat program I can download to chat with others besides Yahoo Messenger?

I used to love using Yahoo Messenger way back in the day. I remember back in the early 2000's when Yahoo Messenger used to have the private chatroom section, of where you got to create your own personal chatroom and invite your friends in to chat. I really miss those days. Now all you have are the public chatrooms, and they're all filled with bots! I would guess that more than half of the people in Yahoo Messenger are not real, but are bots. I'm sick and fed up with Yahoo Messenger now. It's not the same as it used to be. What's a really good Instant Message program I can download and use?
