How do you get into the music business?

  Well, that depends on what aspect you are interested in. In general it helps to live in or near a hub for music. For instance, BMI, the world's largest performing rights company (the ones who collect all the royalties and pay it out to the performers) has headquarters in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York, Puerto Rico and London. If your aspirations are for music industry jobs those are all hot places. Periodically, certain regions get hot for certain types of music as well. For instance grunge in Seattle, country in Branson, MO or hip-hop in Atlanta. If you want to be a performer, just start playing and then play in public anywhere you can. You get both experience and exposure this way. You can play in coffee shops, amateur competitions, school talent shows, on the street or even just for family/friends to start.
