Where are the YM archives stored on my computer?

Is there a software that can store all my yahoo messenger archives even when i'm logging to other computers?

  • When i'm logging in to my yahoo messenger to the other computers, i checked my archives but couldn't find my history messages in my own computer here at home. I know recent archives are only stored in the computer that you use presently. But is there a software i can download here at home, that can store all my yahoo archives even when i'm logging in to the other computers?

  • Answer:

It depends on how you want to use them - its possible to store them on a flashdrive and take them with you. The problem comes when you want to read them as they are encrypted in dat format and you need a decoder. So you would have to plug in the flash drive and copy that persons chat to the Messenger Archives on the new computer. If you wanted to convert to plain text format you could put individual chats into a file and email the attachment to yourself or again on a flash drive http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Instant-Messaging/Yammy-Yahoo-Messenger-Archive-Decoder.shtml

No there is not any such program because as all (recent and past) Yahoo Messenger archives are stored on the computer you are on at the time as long as you have set Yahoo Messenger archives to save all of your messages. Now Yahoo Messenger for the Web stores the message history on the Yahoo Servers and you can access that from any computer since it is not stored on the computer itself. You will have to enable it in Yahoo Messenger for the Web before the messages will be saved. So when you are using a different computer, why not use Yahoo Messenger for the Web and when you get home you can see those records too. Before you rely on Yahoo Messenger for the Web test it out to see if it is actually storing your message history. I had problems with this when I tested it a while ago. Here is the link for Yahoo Messenger for the Web: http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/ . Sign out of regular Yahoo Messenger before you sign into this one if you are using the same Yahoo ID. Click Options on the right and then check Enable Message History and click Done. If that is not working for you. Try logging into the All-New Yahoo Mail and using the chat feature on that. Though there is no message history option, you can turn a message into an email and send it to yourself as a record. You cannot do this in Yahoo Classic Mail. Here is the help page to tell you how to turn that chat message into an email: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/chat/chat-08.html;_ylt=AsrVn_4vjpX3HmYC38YUdkhq5yN4
