Yahoo Messenger Status Updates - How to Turn Them Off & Stay Private?
-
Hello Yahoo Answers, I am very frustrated with a Yahoo Messenger. I have done extensive work in my Yahoo Profile and in Yahoo Messenger preferences in order to prevent Yahoo Messenger from showing what I am doing in Yahoo at any given time. All to no Avail. My Yahoo preferences plainly tell me I have opted to not "Share" info about myself, yet, if I go to Yahoo games and play a game, it continues to pop up as my status. I am infuriated by that problem and my inability to prevent it. Not only this, It continues to say I am playing whatever game for a week or so after I did this. This really is ridiculous. I have friends sending notes to me...."are you playing a GAME? What, are you BORED?" Well, that's my business, no one else's. I have read every bit of help I can find to try and fix this issue, done all I could find instructions to do, and yet it continues to happen. What kind of privacy invasion is this? I just don't understand, and would really like to know how to fix this problem. I simply cannot believe that with all the controls Yahoo supposedly has in place, this issue continues to arise. Surely, others have had this problem? Any ideas about how to fix it? Please HELP!!

Answer:
TO STOP YOUR OWN UPDATES APPEARING: Click on "Messenger" in the top left hand corner of the Messenger Pane. Click on "Manage Updates I Broadcast". This will take you to your Profile page. UNTICK the box "Share my Updates". Click on "Save" at the bottom of the page. TO MANAGE THE UPDATES FROM YOUR CONTACTS: Click on "Messenger" in the top left hand corner of the Messenger Pane. Click on "Preferences". Click on "Yahoo Updates". Click on the box "Customise Yahoo! Updates". Untick the boxes next to your Contacts' names for the updates you do not wish to see. Click on "OK" at the bottom. Please note that it may take a day or so for your own updates to clear and stop appearing.

Yahoo did this crap to me today too! I changed my avatar (but didn't post it cuz I wasnt done), and Yahoo inserted TEXT next to my name saying that I was "wearing a belted sweater and leggings". Since I use Yahoo IM for WORK, I was the joke of the office. Yahoo has apparently decided to go the Google path and screw users in the name of making money. The only way I found to change it - even AFTER I turned off any and all "preferences" I could find related to status updates, was to use the "available" pull down menu in the top of Yahoo IM and change it to ... So at least all people see are the dots. Keep in mind you have to manually set this every time you log in. Yeah, I'm pissed. And I'm actually a paying Yahoo Mail Premium customer, but not for much longer. Messing with my work relationships is way, way over the line.
