How can I install MSN on Windows XP?

My computer Operating System is Windows XP Home, and I have ONLY SP1. Which version of Yahoo IM can I use?

  • I have Gateway, 6+ years old; Gateway tech rep told me my system is NOT compatible with XP's SP's 2 and/or 3. But I Want and Need an IM that I can use for communication sharing...IM, live video and chat, etc., with family. Have been using MSN Messenger; but version I have will no longer work. MSN Mess. insists I install latest version. However, new MSN ver WILL NOT (or CANNOT) install on my XP O.S.. Thus, I have LOST my only method to see my only, new little granddaughter who lives 700+ miles from me, boo-hoo... She is growing up and changing FAST. So....I am DESPERATE! Can somebody can tell me which version of Yahoo IM (or Yahoo Messenger??) will work with my "old" Windows XP that has only the SP1. ADDITIONAL INFO about my Gateway. Windows XP Home O.S. 2002. I have done some updating: RAM (768 mb); sufficient unused HD space; Pentium 4 at1.60 GHz speed; added 2.0 slots. Please help soon. I will be so appreciative.

hm im not sure. i have vista so its hard for me to find stuff to. when i was on the menu of yahoo IM it let me choose which one matched my computer system so i downloaded that one. so if you didnt check that out you may want to. if not, i would look up AIM, which is a free aol instant messanger. its not as fancy than yim but i rather use aim. i know that they have a menu to choose from to match your computer system. I had to search through it to find the vista download. (aim is free, just like yahoo) http://dashboard.aim.com/aim under install now theres the option "all" which you can pick which one to download.

Why would SP2 not be compatible with your PC? If you are using SP1, you should not even be on the Internet because your computer is vulnerable to many Internet exploits. You are probably hosting several worms on your PC. Go to Microsoft Update and let them check out your PC for compatibility with XP/SP 2. I wouldn't trust the Gateway rep on this one. SP2 doesn't have any different hardware requirements than SP1 that I'm aware of. If it truly doesn't work, it's probably time for a new PC. You can pick a refurbed unit up at MicroCenter for under $200, and use your old monitor.
