How do you change the way your name appears in Messenger?

As far as I can tell, when I am communicating in messenger, the other person sees my full name, as this is what I see when I type text to another messenger user. How do you get it back to how it used to be before Yahoo was upgraded, as in only show my yahoo id I want- songbyrd26. I don't feel safe having my last name appear for all to see.
