How to find out if any of your contacts are online?

When your on instead messages and you dont have contacts how do you find someone to talk to thats online?

    sweetie, if you have the messenger and you are logged in with that messenger using your ID, enter into chatrooms by clicking "Yahoo Chat" > Join a Room > choose the chatroom you want to enter and then join with the people inside the chatroom during conversation. try to pick some of them and send an IM. if someone will talk to you, ask them favor if you could add their ID in your list. collect chat buddies inside the chatroom. once you have plenty already, everytime you get online with your messenger, right click the people you add and click "Send Instant Message" if they are online or drop messages if they offline.
