Why doesnt yahoo messenger , wth online contacts show up when Im checking my mail?

I can acess my mail,, yet cant see contacts who are onlne,,nor can they see me,, and from my search for answers Ive actually changed my password a couple of times,, , but want it all to be the one it is now,, This has been going on for over a month,,without any answers from yahoo,, so Im running around in circles!!!
