Answer:
At the top of the messenger, pull down the Messenger tab and then click on My Contact Details. There's a place to enter your name and also a nickname. =) If you don't put a nickname, whatever you put under the First Name/Middle Name/Last Name will show up on your friends' lists.. If you put a nickname, then the nickname will show up instead.
