How can I get rid of yahoo companion popup?

When I get new yahoo email and I click the popup window my yahoo messenger shuts down?

  • I have windows xp and recently updated my yahoo messenger to 9.0. When I did that I started having problems. When I click the email icon, which looks like an envelope, I get an error msg that YM needs to shut down. It also shuts down when I click those pop up windows at the bottom of the screen announcing I have new yahoo mail. I have tried uninstalling through add/remove in control panel and then reinstalling. I also tried using an older version since those worked fine until I installed the upgrade to YM 9.0 but now those are doing the same thing. I noticed however that the older version 7.x are working fine for me but those will be discontinued in August so I can't continue to use those. So I tried a complete uninstall by going into programs and then to yahoo then to messenger and copying all the profile messages first before deleting the file. This also didn't solve the problem when I reinstalled YM9. So does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can resolve the weird problem I am having? I am not a novice but this has me really stumped. I also checked a couple other things like compatibility ...it had windows 2000 checked so I unchecked that since I have never had 2000.. not sure why that automatically was selected and I am not using that OS. By the way...this has nothing to do with the new messenger that opens within the yahoo email itself..this is strictly having to do with the stand alone original yahoo messenger program. I need some brilliant minds to help hahaha. Thanks all...

Hi, you have several locations that are capable of accessing Yahoo IM. Yahoo Messenger itself, plus Yahoo Web Messenger, Yahoo Mail, My Yahoo, your Mobile phone, plus any other computer.etc etc. Yahoo classifies all these programs as different 'locations or devices' Yahoo currently do not allow you to have 2 open and active at the same time. If you have one open, and then move to another, one will close and you get a message telling you that you have been signed out. You CAN have Messenger and Mail open together as long as your status is set to "offline" in MAIL by using the drop-box next to your name and selecting 'Sign out of chat'. ( your chat contacts will remove themselves from the inbox until you make yourself 'availble' again.) Please note: You may think you are signed out of Messenger when this is not the case. Hitting the 'X' when you close the Messenger page does not sign you out of Messenger it only closes that page - you have to Exit Messenger by right clicking the icon in the system tray.and selecting 'Exit' I suggest you make this setting. > (left click) Messenger > Preferences > General - check box "sign out of Messenger when I close the main window" > Apply > OK. If the above does not apply and you suspect your account is being used by a hacker. When you get signed out, close all your Yahoo programs and type your name into this software. Hit "GO" and hopefully it will show you as "offline". If not, contact Yahoo customer services http://detectinvisible.com/

Daddybear is correct. If it is only when you click the icon to go to your Yahoo! Mail it is because you can't use both chat features and just as he said the solution is to disable the chat feature of Yahoo! Mail by signing out of the chat part. When you asked a question earlier and I answered it you had stated that Yahoo Messenger shut down when you clicked on pretty much anything on Yahoo Messenger. You did not limit it to just Yahoo Mail. So if after getting 9.0.0.2162, after doing a complete clean uninstall of Yahoo Messenger 7.0, and it only shuts down now when you click that mail icon, that is easily fixed as Daddybear has explained.
