Why my yahoo messenger not work?

Why won't Yahoo Messenger for Vista work?

  • Ok, well I just downloaded version 8.1 of yahoo messenger and it wouldn't let me sign in at all, no matter what I did. So then I downloaded the yahoo messenger specifically for Vista (since that's the program on my computer) It installed just fine, but when I type my username and password in and start to sign in, a message comes up that says there is a problem and yahoo messenger has stopped working. I really don't know what I'm supposed to do to fix it and I know there has to be some way to make yahoo messenger work on Vista. Someone please help me solve this dilema, all the help would be GREATLY appreciated! =) Oh and by the way I tried to download an earlier version (7.0) and I wasn't even able to get the installation started, it kept saying it couldn't do it.

  • Answer:

There is a virus, worm or Trojan going around that is infecting computers and causing Yahoo Messenger to close every time one attempts to Sign in. This sounds similar to the problem that you have had though you didn't say what exactly happens when you try to sign in. I am going to include more information about this and about what to do if you have problems installing Yahoo Messenger. Hopefully some of this information will be of help to you. YAHOO MESSENGER KEEPS CLOSING WHEN YOU TRY TO SIGN IN Most likely your computer is infected with a virus or worm. This is happening to a lot of people and one of the symptoms that something is wrong is yahoo messenger closing when you try to Sign in. Uninstalling Yahoo Messenger will not fix the problem since the problem remains on your computer. You need to run antivirus and spyware scans. Ones that are up to date. Be sure to also scan any external hard drive, flash drive, USB storage device that you use as well. I have even heard that iPods can be infected so be sure to scan those too. -------------------------------- You should definitely have Anti-virus protection at all times. One that is up to date and able to receive virus definitions every day. One of the best commercial versions is Nod32. If you cannot afford a commercial version than I recommend AVG free antivirus 8.0. You should have only one antivirus program installed on your computer. Because antivirus programs have real time protection more than one can cause conflicts and not work as well. And you must have one to protect your computer at all times. You can safely use online virus scanners to supplement your main antivirus program; in fact it is a must if you are using a free antivirus program since they are not by themselves as effective as the top rated commercial antivirus programs. Here is a link for some free online scanners: http://www.johannrain-softwareentwicklung.de/e_online_antivirus_scan.htm But antivirus protection is not enough. You also need antispyware program that has real time protection. One of the top rated commercial ones is Webroot Spy Sweeper. There are free spyware scanners available but none of them will match the protection of the top rated commercial ones but you can use a combination of free ones to increase the detection ability. Windows Defender is a free one that is recommended due to it having real time protection unlike most free ones. You can supplement it with Spy Bot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 Free. Neither of those has full real time protection and is best used as supplemental On-Demand scanners. You can find free antivirus and antispyware programs on this link if you cannot afford commercial ones. http://www.techsupportalert.com/dr/security Scanners are useless if you do not keep them up to date with the latest definitions. On the same link above you can look into free trojan scanners too. The best commercial one is Trojan Hunter. It is worth investing in top rated commercial antivirus and spyware protection if you can afford it. Some originally only antivirus programs are now combining antispyware protection as well so do the research. -------------------------- DIFFICULTY DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING YAHOO MESSENGER? Try rebooting your computer then do not open any programs except going to http://messenger.yahoo.com/ and downloading new installer and save it to your desktop. Now double click it and run the installer. Please Note: If on Windows Vista right click the installer and choose “Install as Administrator”. If the above does not work or if you are using Windows Vista try using this links below for the full installer (does not rely on yahoo servers). These full installers come directly from a yahoo server and by pass the web installer that most use. If on Windows Vista right click the full installer and choose “Install as Administrator”. If you are still unable to install it, after you download the installer, you might have to temporarily disable the User Account Control (UAC). You can easily turn it back on. On the Control Panel (Category View) choose User Accounts and Family Safety, next choose User Accounts, and then click Turn User Account Control on or off.
