Why when i click on a friend in my messenger list it shuts down my messenger and i cant even talk to them?

i try to talk to a friend on my friends list on yahoo messenger but when i click on the friend my entire messenger closes. also when my friend messeges me i dont even get the chance to read it and it closes my yahoo messenger. can anyone tell me how to correct this problem. i have tried uninstalling messenger and reinstalling it. i have tried deleting the contact and adding it back in but its still the same. Please someone help me.
