What are the webcam requirements for Yahoo! Messenger?

Yahoo Messenger can't find my webcam. What should I do?

  • I got a new webcam and following the instructions on the installation manual, I successfully installed the webcam's software. For about three days, the webcam was working in harmony with Yahoo messenger until the next day, I don't know what happened but suddenly Yahoo Messenger couldn't recognize the camera anymore. I couln't even see it anymore in the choice for "camera source" in the Yahoo Messenger Preferences. I tried everything like uninstalling the webcam driver and Yahoo Messenger and reinstalled them again, adding the "UseVFW" DWORD in the registry editor, added webcam.yahoo.com at the exception list in Windows firewall but to no avail. However, my webcam still works perfectly well with MSN Messenger. My webcam is Buffalo BWC-35MH01 USB PC Camera and my OS is Windows XP Home edition. Please advise.

    Try installing the latest verion of the webcam driver from the manufacturer's web site. If that doesn't work, You should un-install Messenger and do a clean re-install. The un-install is important; it removes any corrupt files that a re-install might not fix. Click the "Start" button, click "Control Panel", and open "Add/Remove Programs". Scroll down to "Yahoo! Messenger" and remove it. (If you can find it, look for "SBC Yahoo!" or any item in the list with the word "Yahoo!" in it.) Then install a fresh copy of the most recent version from http://messenger.yahoo.com

that happened to me too. try uninstalling the program then re- install it. it worked for me so i presume it will wirk for you?!

You will need to reinstall your camera drivers and check for updates to them,, rememember that the camera has to be unplugged when you install the drivers,, only plug it back in after you shut down the computer,, plug in cam,, then reboot,, all should be fine.
