How to add friend to instant messaging?

I cant see texts from a friend on instant messaging?

i accepted a friend request but can recieve there text. it will show that they are typing to me but i dont recieve the message from them...my text is seen by me but i dont see theres

If the problem is only with one contact a) They haven't added you to their contact list and have the setting made to ignore anyone not on their list b) They have multiple chat windows open and the message you see being typed is being sent to another contact c) They have a scripting problem - email them this link and tell them you are not receiving IM's http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger10/notices/mstabuguqscripterror.html
