Is there a way for a macintosh user to log into a chat room?

at one time i was able to log into chat rooms through java, but now that yahoo had eliminated the use of java, i am at a loss of how to log into a chat room. the yahoo instant messenger for mac is different from the pc version and i can not log in through the instant messenger feature... are mac users left out in the cold?
