How do I message someone on yahoo?

How come when I message someone on yahoo messenger my message doesn't show up even if I am online?

• I sign into yahoo messenger and it shows me as online. On the other hand it shows all of my friends being offline when I know for a fact they are online and visible. When I try to message them my message doesn't show up. When they try to message me it doesn't show up.
