Why wont my blackberry messenger to work?

i have been given a blackberry messenger from a friend, i have popped my sim in it and it does seem to have bb messenger on it, but his profile with his friends. i deleted all of that and made it me but it wont work...mates have said that they have added me and i have tried too....the thing is, i am useless with phones and have never had a 'good' phone, and never had one with the internet either lol i have a pay as you go phone....how do i make it work? how do i use the internet and set up bbm do i need the internet or to download something...or am i just being stupid? please help because i really have no idea!

BBM requires data and will not work with wi-fi.
