Why can't I view the messages people sent me?

Why cant i view instant messages when people send them to me?

I can send out messages to my contact list people and they can view them no problem but when they send a reply back to me i cannot see their response. It looks as if i am staring at a blank instant messaging. I cant view my messages i sent out and i cant see messages that i am receiving but the peron on the other end can see my message i sent to them. This is really confusin and i would love to get this fixed as soon as possible.
