This sounds like spam to me. I think it's safer not to click on any link in that E-mail invitation.

click the link within the e-mail to join- it's not an auto join link. it brings you to the join page which you'd have to fill out in order to join, but there'll be a link there that says view this groups homepage- something like that. that's how you find out what the groups about
