My town and sex appear by my email address in yahoo groups! Profile wont let me put in blanks. How do I remove?

When I signed up for Yahoo years ago I was required to fill in town and sex and birth date. I believed this would be kept private. Now it appears for all to see. I tried to change it in my profile but the change does not happen.
