What do you think of people who ask for an item to be of certain quality on freecycle?
-
I recently sent an e-mail to a user because she posted that she wanted a queen size mattress and box spring and requested 'clean and decent ones only." I told her that I didn't think it was right for her to request the quality, and if she wanted a clean and decent mattress, she should look on craigslist or elsewhere to buy one. Does anyone else feel this way too? I feel that if you are asking for someone to give you a free item, and you are truly in NEED of the item, you can't be picky about it's condition. If you want to privately decline a mattress that someone offers you, fine, but don't specify how nice the item must be. Mattresses are expensive! She reposted her post and told everyone she had received a horrible e-mail, told me that she wasn't going to justify my stupidity, and told the moderator about a rude and uncalled for e-mail, and I was removed from the group. The moderator added me back and we talked about the situation. In addition, I see people asking for multiple household items, as if they are expecting others to furnish their homes! I feel this is greedy. The manual even says to use the want post sparingly. And it seems people are just trying to get free stuff so they don't have to spend money, not that they are in need of an item because it is necessary and they are in a situation where they really can't afford it right then. I am trying to get a rule added to the manual that says people can't request the item be in a certain condition. I feel that's just rude when asking for a free item! If they happen to get a like-new item, great, but don't make that your standard. Anyone else with me on this?

Answer:
She is a beggar and beggars can't be choosers. Is that what you are trying to say? Well "beggars can't be choosers" is an age old maxim. Feel free to use it in conversation and debate.

I totally disagree. I am moderator for a large Free cycle group, and I would certainly allow that condition request. Who wants to sleep on a dirty mattress? Better to specify the details first than go on a long drive and find something you can't use. Also, as a member of the group, not a moderator, you really had no right to respond direct to another member with criticism. I too would have banned you from the group.
