Do loons live singly or in groups ?

  • Answer:

I grew up on Lake Superior and Loons are a favorite bird of mine. I double-checked my answer for you before speaking up, and I'm glad I did. I have only ever seen loons alone or in pairs, so I thought that they were solitary birds. However, according to the Loon Preservation Committee: "Although they are thought of as solitary birds, loons sometime gather into small groups in the summer. In September, group feeding is quite common as loons gather on larger lakes during migration. Loons are usually found in groups on their ocean wintering grounds." Now we both know! :-)
