I keep getting invites to join people in Yahoo Groups? What does this entail?

I keep getting invites to join people in Yahoo Groups. What does Yahoo Groups entail? I haven't accepted any because I'm not a member of any 'group'. Is it a CHAT box for people? Or, is it like Y/A? What is your experience with the Yahoo Groups?
Answer:

I belong to several Christian Yahoo Groups, where the members share scripture, encouraging poems and/or articles, and pray for one another. You can learn a lot from the other members' postings, the daily struggles they are having in their own lives and how the Lord has helped them. When I have a specific prayer request, I know I can post my request on the site, and I know other Christians are praying in agreement with me. God bless you!!!

I love Yahoo Groups. I belong to several. Some for dog rescue, and one for my profession. Its great to get tips from people or help when needed.

I've been getting them a lot too. I ignore them because they're usually spam. There are real Yahoo Groups, and they're user communities, kind of like groups on Facebook. But invites from these groups with names usually followed by a number (i.e. KyleLivingston50) come unsolicited and are usually spam. I copied the following from an email I got from a Yahoo Group: Yahoo! Groups is a free service that allows you to stay in touch with friends and family or meet new people who share your interests.

Groups have a common interest. I belonged to a couple of political groups. I left 1 but still belong to the other. You can get a daily digest of the subjects being posted. If you have hobbies or other interests, you can search groups and find one that interests you. It is easy to join or unjoin.
