Yahoo recategorized my group from Embroidery to Adult, but we don't do adult! Help!?
-
I have a small group of machine embroidery testers who test my designs before sale. Right after Yahoo unveiled it's "new look" I logged on to see that my group, which as always been listed in "Hobbies & Crafts > Crafts > Needlecrafts > Embroidery" had been re-categorized in "Love & Romance > Adult". Normally I know that I'd be able to recategorize the group on my own one time (which I did not do, and it's not the sort of thing I'd have done "by accident") but since *someone* did it, it has taken the "edit" option away from me to do it. I do have 2 moderators, but they have limited access and doublechecking under "moderator activity" shows no activity regarding changing of category. This new categorization is HIGHLY inappropriate for my little group, I have written Yahoo Groups for help (since there seems to be no other way to contact them) with no response. Is there any better way to contact Yahoo Groups support to get faster assistance? And no, we don't house adult content.

Answer:
First, check to make sure there is no adult content anywhere in your group -- links, photos, files, adult language in posts, etc. Once you are sure your group is "clean," go here and fill out the form: http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/groups/cgi_recategorize Be polite. You may have to submit more than once (every few days or so). Good luck!

There is no way to quickly contact Yahoo. If you figure one out, I would like to know. On a brighter note, it usually does not take more than two or three days to get a resolution. When you do, CHANGE ALL THE PASSWORDS. Somebody managed to hack your group.

Really! I havent looked at the new categories but that is bizarre.
I've noticed a few screw ups since the update. It seems they were having problems. I was getting used to having best answers every other day or so. Since then nothing. Look on the home page, they did have a notice that you could click on to report problems. I'm with you, embroidery shouldn't be listed where you say it is. A bit silly to say the least.

Patti has given you the correct link to see about re-categorizing your group, but it will not help to resubmit every few days (it would probably hinder, as Yahoo will have more emails to wade through!). The correct method is to wait for their reply, then reply to that if necessary. Most of the time when you submit forms to Yahoo, they will first reply with a standard, automated reply. You must reply to that and continuing replying to their replies until you get a real person replying to you with answers that relate to your problem. Leave all the previous information in your replies so they can see what they've already tried telling you. Be polite, but do keep replying and you will most likely get the desired response. As for how your group ended up there, it's highly unlikely that someone hacked in and it probably wasn't your moderators (especially since nothing shows in the history). What usually happens in these cases is that someone has put something in your group somewhere that is adult material. Check files, photos, etc. and if you find something, delete it. Furthermore, Yahoo does not have the manpower to go looking for this stuff. They respond to complaints, so someone has complained about this content being in your group and Yahoo doesn't ask questions, they just recategorize (again, lack of manpower to question you for your side of the story). To protect yourself from this in the future, you just need to be aware that this can happen and patrol your group on a regular basis to look for such content. If you don't have the time, there are other measures you can take, like making membership restricted and checking out the people asking to join. Enlist your co-moderators help in patroling as well.
