How can i get people to join my freecycle?

  • i just opened a new freecycle for ellesmere port and neston. any ideas how i can get people to join, to get it started? i'm going to tell all my friends so hopefully they'll join. for thoses of you who dont know what freecycle is, its the latest technology in recycling, people give stff away for free and you can also give away stuff for free, it helps to keep the land fills a little bit emptier. for those of you who would like to help me out and join, the link is, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ellesmere-port-and-neston-freecycle any ideas would be much appreciated, thank you

First, I can't see your group is listed at http://freecycle.org - see http://freecycle.org/display.php?region=United%20Kingdom#Cheshire make sure it is. Then if local people hear about the idea of freecycle independently and go to the main site to look for a group near them, then they can find you that way. THE most important thing to do is do lots of promotion for it in the 'real world' locally. Make posters & flyers with your website address, the subscribe email address, an explanation of what freecycle is & also include the main freecycle website address prominently - your actual group web address will be hard for people to remember at a glance, but as long as the thing they 'take away' from the poster is the word 'freecycle' and a grasp of the idea, then if they are interested it will be easy for them to find the main website & look for you in the local groups listing. (And if people visiting your town see the posters & are interested they can go & find their own local group). Get your posters into local shops, community centres, the library, anywhere you can think of. Write to the local papers. Try and get a mention on local radio. Get local community websites to link to you. Email the moderators of other freecycle groups in Cheshire, Merseyside & the Wirral (find them in the main freecycle group listings) and ask them to post a message about your new group on their lists - then their members will know about you. Don't worry, once people start joining it'll all take off really quickly. Good luck with it.

i am a member of the macclesfield one. maybe they should open a cheshire based site rather than towns?

Contact your local council, get them to advertise on thier website as part of thier 'green' recycling credentials.

First off you can't just MAKE a Freecycle group. You have to apply to start one. If you started a Freecycle group via this link; http://freecycle.org/startagroup/ then you are official. Official groups have access to state groups where you can talk to other owners and get ideas on how to promote your group. If you did NOT start a group via the link above but rather just made on up; this question is moot since your group will be taken down by Freecycle trademark
