How To Pray The Rosary?

What prayers do you say when you pray the Rosary?

  • Do you always say the same prayers when you pray the rosary? Do you ever pray different prayers when you pray the rosary? Do you ever sing hymns with the rosary, or sing any of the prayers?

  • Answer:

No, The prayers stay the same. Apostles creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. But the meditations are different. For example, On one decade you'll be meditating on Jesus' Carrying of his cross. While on another decade you'll be meditating on his crucifixion. As for singing the Rosary, no I've never done that. But, I think it could sound very pretty. Edit: I've heard the same thing too, about the Our Fathers. Originally, in the early church monks used to pray on beads the 150 psalms from the Bible. However laypeople were either to poor to own the Bible and memorize the psalms, or they were too illiterate. So, in place of the psalms they would pray 150 Our Fathers. Today, I've never heard of people doing this.

The only changes I make are: replacing the Hail Holy Queen prayer with various Marian prayers that deeply speak to my heart. and I replace the Third Luminous Mystery with the meditating over the scene of "Our Lord meets the Samaritan woman at the well" I deeply enjoy the dialogue within that scene. Whether I'm praying with my wife or alone I never sing any of the rosary prayers.

The rosary is a meditative prayer, mediating on the five glorious mysteries of faith, the five joyful mysteries of faith, and the five sorrowful mysteries of faith. It starts off by making the sign of the cross and then the prayer The Apostle's Creed, then an Our Father, then three Hail Marys, then a Glory Be to the Father, then the first mystery of faith is announced, then an Our Father, then ten Hail Marys while you mediate on the first mystery of faith, then another Glory Be to the Father and announce the second mystery of faith. You do this until you've gone through five mysteries of faith. At the end you say the prayer The Hail Holy Queen. Usually, the joyful mysteries are said on a monday and thursday, the sorrowful on tuesday and friday and the glorious on wednesday saturday and sunday. Sometimes this prayer is said after the ten Hail Marys--Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have the most need of your mercy... I don't remember hearing hymns, or singing any of the prayers. It's usually prayed in some parishes before or after Mass, the day or two before a person's funeral, or in your home. Some people pray the rosary every day, others haven't dusted off their beads in years. Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Orthodox and several other denominations also pray the rosary.
