How do you get a CRB check when you are self employed?
-
I am trying to set myself up doing craft parties and workshops for children but am unsure how to go about getting myself a CRB, because normally people do this through the company that is employing them. Please help!

Answer:
How do I apply for a CRB Check? An individual cannot make an application for a Disclosure directly. Current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves, as they cannot ask an exempted question of themselves. It is for the recruiting organisation asking the exempted question to assess an applicant’s suitability. However, a self-employed person can apply for a CRB check by registering with an agency. For example nannies wanting a CRB check would register with an agency. The agency would be eligible to ask an exempted question in respect of these self-employed individuals, as the agency is making an assessment of the suitability and is deciding whether to place them on their books. In this example the agency if registered with the CRB could countersign the application form, or could ask an umbrella body to countersign on their behalf. Individuals are able to obtain a Basic Disclosure from our colleagues at Disclosure Scotland (see http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/basic.htm ). This will provide individuals with details of any “unspent” convictions. Alternatively, individuals are able to make a “subject access” request to their local police force under the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998, which will provide up-to-date details of any criminal records in the UK.” This is because there needs to be an independent person who makes the decision to employ an individual having assessed that they pose no threat to either children or vulnerable adults in their care. If a person is self-employed there is no independent third party to make that decision. There are two ways of applying for a CRB check. You will either be asked to: telephone the Disclosure application line on 0870 90 90 811, in which case you will need to provide the Registered Body name and number (Please have this information to hand when calling), or complete a paper application form handed to you by the person who asked you to apply. In both instances, you will have to provide evidence of your name, address and date of birth, along with the Registered Body name and number, and the level of CRB check. This will help the person who asked you to apply, confirm your identity
