What are the jobs most in demand in the UK?

In the UK at the moment what jobs are under the greatest demand? IT, techers?

  • I'm looking at studying in South Africa and then moving to England for a couple of years to make some money. What professionals does England need? Considering I would probably only move in the next 4/5 years - what do you think I should study?

    Teachers are in great demand - secondary level - maths, science (especially Physics), there is a list on the governments' teacher training web site. However, quite a few qualifications are needed to become a teacher in England - you need to get Qualified Teacher Status, and there a various avenues into this, but mainly people get either a PGCE (post graduate Certificate of Education - 1 year full time) which requires an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline for entry. You can do a 3 year undergraduate teaching degree, or it is possible to work as a teacher and go for the training - however, this is paid less, and is more competitive. Personally, I wouldn't recommend studying IT - go for another discipline that involves a lot of IT, but is not exclusively IT. I'd go for Maths or Physics (maybe Chemistry) - they are good base level degrees, and can open up a lot of disciplines and jobs for you (not just teaching). There is a glut of IT graduates entering the market all the time, with not enough IT jobs. I graduated 5 years ago, have a degree in Physics, yet a job in ICT support - I beat IT graduates to the job as I have more relevant experience for the job as a result of my degree and hobbies. Another area you might want to consider is medicine. England is desperate for nurses and doctors. Good luck, whatever you decide!

I'd echo some of the others. Teachers are poorly paid in the UK. Some of the biggest demand is for skilled "blue-collar" jobs like electricians, plumbers, builders, etc. There is not a strong apprenticeship system in the UK, so we do not appear to train enough of them ourselves. Hence the many skilled contractors from Eastern Europe now available in London. In general, an engineering/maths/science background is very good: again we are not producing enough graduates in these area, and the demand for quantitative skills is very high. Many of them go on to work in financial services for the big investment banks, rather than using these skills directly.

I think it's a fallacy that the UK is in need of teachers. I think there was a shortage five years ago, but not now. The dfes has a big recruitment drive and funded where there were particular subject shortages, until there weren't any more. And the places where there are still shortages you probably wouldn't want to go (inner city schools). PLus UK schools (discipline) are out of control There are shortages of specialised high level engineers, commisioning and testing. And strangely there are a shortage of steel fixers (in my experience).
