Looking for a job in Sales?

Being a sales person looking for a new job you need to lie about your unmet targets, correct ?

  • scenario: you got a sales job, your sales targets were set unrealistically high but you found it out after some months and as a result you managed to do 25% of targets after a year. Now you need to leave and find another sales role. Being realistic rather then ethical & optimistic, would you tell the truth to recruiters on the phone when they ask about your targets ? will they bother to get you in front of their clients saying the guy is great, but made 25% of his targets ....?

    I was in exactly the same situation! I lied. Got the job and after 3months got the best sales rating. Even did better than the person working there for 7years. Did not make allot of friends at work, but did impress my boss. If you are certain about the unrealistic targets and know you can achieve realistic targets, nothing else to do but lie! If you get to the interview and you feel you are in a situation where you can explain what happened at your previous work...I would do so.

Whilst you obviously dont want to announce those kind of figures at an interview, it does not make good sense to lie either. If you came for a sales job with me, and I found out that you had lied (some things can be checked up on) then you would be out on your ear. But ... you can be smart ... lets assume that your target figure was £250,000 in sales. It wouldnt make sense to tell me that you only achieved 25%, on the other hand simply telling me the figure you achieved might get you an interview. Remember one thing too, you say that the targets were set unrealistically high, if you ever said that to me at an interview I would see you as a whinger and you would be passed over. ian
