How long can a sixteen year old work for in a Restaurant?

  • I am a sixteen year old student, hopefully starting at sixth form in September. I am currently on holiday (although I still only want to be part time during this period) and have recently got a job in a restaurant. However the manager has asked me to do 7 shifts this week, each shift is six hours long, sometimes I do two shifts in one day therefore working for twelve hours. I was just wondering how many hours I should be allowed to work (during holidays and school term), what breaks I am entitled too and, if possible, how I can politely tell my manager that I am working too many shifts? Thanks.

    It is recommended to work only 20 hours because you need to focus on your top priority which is sixth form. However as you are out of compulsory education you can work as long as you like but it is not recommend.

-----14 year olds----- There are a lot of rules that control working hours of children, but the basic ones are: during term time, you can only work for two hours on weekdays and Sundays during term time, you can only work for five hours on Saturdays during a school holiday, you can work for up to five hours on a week day or a Saturday during a school holiday, you can't work for more than two hours on a Sunday you cannot work before 7.00 am or after 7.00 pm on any day 15 and 16 year olds -----If you're 15 or 16----- and are working while you're still at school, your rights are almost identical to those of 14 year olds.
