How does the mobility scheme work?

UK Visa tier 5 youth mobility scheme?

  • Hi there, i am a canadian citizen and i would like to get a work visa to the UK tier 5 youth mobility scheme. before i apply i was talking to people and they said after i do my 2 years of work there i can come home and then re apply again, and then after 5 years of working there i might be able to get citizenship. my question is i was looking on a website and it said if i apply for tier 5 youth mobility scheme or any tier 5 type of visa i cannot apply for settlement from tier 5 and the time i spend in any tier 5 category will not count towards any settlement i may apply for in the future. in other words what does that mean??? does that mean i will never be able to get settlement as in citizenship? because that is my plan is to go to the UK and work and then after years fo working i want citizenship. please help. thank you very much:)

  • Answer:

Tier 5 visas are temporary visas. Any time spent in the UK on temporary visas does not count towards settlement. A condition of these visas is that you will leave at the end of your stay. You can only apply under the Youth Mobility Scheme once, so if you want to return to the UK you will have to do so under another visa type and are no restrictions against you returning to the UK on another type of visa. If you return on a visa that counts towards settlement, you cannot claim the time previously spent in the UK on the YMS visa in addition.
