What is it like to work in sales? (entry-level)?
-
I'm a Romanian student with a first degree in marketing from a 'crap' uni/ex-poly and have been feeling pretty hopeless for a month (I had my last exam in May) so I decided to start applying for jobs until someone will be willing to arrange an interview. I applied for the Reed.co.uk graduate scheme, which is a 3 year placement that offers graduates opportunities to work in marketing/HR and other core functions of the company at the end of the placement. I have been called to attend an assessment centre next week but what happened was that when I applied for the scheme, the title of the first operational position was 'Media Sales Executive', which included vague tasks like 'helping our company maintain its position as market leader', and so on. After I received an informational pack from the company in order to be able to attend the assessment, the description for the job had changed from media sales exec to TELESALES executive. Now, this is entirely different. I knew the job would involve sales but it seems like this particular position is going to consist mostly of cold calling. Surely I haven't worked to get a good degree in order to cold call people who want nothing to do with me? Anyway, here is the description I received. "The role involves making outbound sales calls, contacting prospective businesses and recruitment agencies and selling the offerings and services of the website. Responsibilities: • To meet and exceed all business KPIs • To establish new business relationships whilst also account managing and up selling your existing client base" My question to you is...how bad is it working in sales? I have tried to do telephone fundraising before and even a bit of cold calling and it is TOUGH. How much can the training provided by the company help you achieve your targets, and what happens if you don't? As in, what happens if you follow all the procedures and scripts given to you but do not get lucky? It says here that the basic salary is 20k. I am hoping this is not tied to commission/sales numbers. Have any of you worked in sales before and is it worth it for me to pursue this job? I personally believe it is impossible for me to ever sell anything over the phone. Also, since it is Reed we are talking about and I would actually be working for them, I'm assuming it's more than the everyday cold calling I get on my land line asking me to claim my 4000 pounds for an accident I had. I'm really sorry for the long message, I tend to ramble!
