Hi British people! Could someone please explain what the "high street shops are"?
-
I am currently translating an article and I am not sure how to translate the "high street shops" - it may sound silly, I know, but, the thing is that I am not sure whether it's possible to translate it just as "shops" or are those shops something special - like a "boutique" maybe ; translating word for word the "high street shops" would sound just stupid in my target language, so if anyone could explain what those shops are, where they are, what it is possible to buy there, and who goes there; that would be great! It would give me a general picture - I tried to search the net, but there's just no explanation. Any help at all would be very appreciated.

Answer:
Its our way of saying shops on streets. For example, instead of having a shopping centre all the shops are on a street.

The High Street is the main shopping area for most towns, The shops are mainly from national chains who can afford rents etc, of the prime shopping sites, This is where you will find Woolworth and Boots and the other major retailers, So High Street shops are those national chain shops that can be found in most towns and shopping arcades .

um they're like the regular shops that are found in pretty much every high street in towns/cities of the UK for example, New Look, H&M, TopShop, Primark, Boots, Debenhams. normal people go there to buy things that are nice but not designer.

The "High Street" in the UK is usually a main road through a town where all the biggest retailers stores will typically be found like WH Smiths, Boots and Woolworths. In the USA I think your equivalent would be an Avenue. Hope that helps.
