How old do i have to be to work legally?

How old do I have to be to work (in the UK)?

  • Hey, I'm 15 and I am on study leave. I only have to go in for my exams and I only have 6 left to do, so I'm looking for a job. I'm wondering where I can legally work, like can I work in cafe's and supermarkets? I'm not looking for great jobs, just a summer job. I can work most hours as I'm not in school, but I don't know the laws on being 15 and working as the internet is telling me a lot of different things, can somebody help? thanks:) x

  • Answer:

You can do a paper round but you are banned from some types of work eg although you could wash up in a pub you can't serve alcohol. If you look on the website for your local council it will tell you what you need to do to be able to work legally in your area. This may mean sign off on the work by your school and parents.

At 15 you MUST get written permission from your school. You are restricted to a MAXIMUM of 10 hours a week. It is ILLEGAL for you to handle alcohol in a shop/pub until you are 16 - and then you MUST be supervised every time you handle alcohol until you are 18.
