How much would you pay someone to help you move house (use their van & them?)?
-
We are moving house and we need a van for the fridge, beds etc. The local company is charging £65 for using the van all day, but you put your own fuel and drive it yourself. There is a friend of a friend who has a van and said he could help BUT he wont say a price. I want to pay less than the commercial company BUT he is driving it & fuel etc so I dont want to rip him off - whats a fair price?

Answer:
well if he is putting in fuel and helping you carry stuff ....depending on how many hours he will spend with you i'd say give him £10 an hour and load up as quick as poss' If the van is his and there isn't to much fuel cost and time involved driving and loading i'd say two loads i'd say pay him no less then £40 if it his own van and there is only one load(less then 2hours work) i'd say £25 if less then 5-10 mile trip thats just my personal ideas I may be far off the mark of other people opinions of course and take into consideration mates rates, and besides if he won't tell you how much he wants and you give less thats his own fault for not telling you when you gave him the opportunity

£100 at most. Maybe I'm being harsh but it's only moving house.

if its local, bung him a score for petrol and slip him 50 quid for his help, he may refuse it in which case its only cost you twenty quid for fuel. he might take it and then your removal has only cost 70 pounds with van, fuel and labour.

start at £65 add £30 for fuel and an extra £50 for the driver.roughly around £145. i know its a higher figure than you anticipated but honestly that's cheap compared to a removal company

I would say £60 - £65 as you are getting the use of his van, fuel, his time. and his labour. The question is if you were him what would you want? Let your conscience be your guide, if you yourself would want less , offer less but if you would want more..........

A friend of a friend is not your friend and if its what he does for a living why should he do it for nothing, admittedly he should give you a guide of what he is expecting though, sounds like it isnt what he does for a living. A friend of a friend doesnt sound like he would be insured against damage to your property either. Dont forget the £65 doesnt include one persons help and the fuel so you can add at least £80 for all day and around £1 for every mile travelled (laden vans drink fuel) even at £20's worth of fuel you are now on £165 for the whole day. I would say upto 30 miles £150 and see what he says.

Just tell your mate.. "Might as well give you 30 quid mate. The company is charging me 65 but hey, you're a mate, and I can only afford 30 quid. How about it. Fast earner for a couple of hours or so. Eh?" See what he says and you're done. Sorted. Even say, "I'll throw in a drink mate!" That one never fails.
