What is the best way of getting donations for a silent auction?
-
I am the event co-chair for a Canadian children's charity and we are having a fundraiser on April 29th. One of my "jobs" is to obtain as many silent auction items as possible. I have hit up a number of big companies but it seems that unless you have an "in", they don't really want to help out. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Answer:
Get letterhead with the charity organization's information on it. Get a pad and paper, so you can keep up with your leads. Call area sports teams, companies, manufacturers and retailers and ask to speak to the department which oversees charitable contributions. Mark the dates you call each company. Those that seem to go no where...call back in 2-3 days & do it again. Write down the name of everyone you speak to so that you can use them in your next follow-up. Initial phone conversation could go 'Hi! My name is so&so and I am calling on behalf of xyz org. We are have a silent auction in April to raise money for yada-yada & I know your organization has some wonderful products. I'd like to know what I need to do to get your company to donate xyz or whatever it can for us to auction off." Often times, they require a written request on official letterhead 30 days in advance. Follow the written request up with a phone call to the person who directed you to send the fax/letter or to who was to receive it. Many retailers & mom &pop shops will also donate. They may be more receptive to you just showing up & making a plea in person. Again, be prepared with letters/donation receipts. Good Luck!

I think you should first think about what kind of people are going to be attending the event and then think about what kind of items the people would like and go from there. Ex) If you think the people would like college sports stuff, try contacting local universities or whatever to see if they would donate for the event.

Silent auction? Try sign language.

Design a poster and have several printed. Make sure you have information on it about being a non-profit, collecting donations for a charity silent auction. Mention that their gift may be tax deductible (depends on the laws in your country). Appeal to their sense of caring about humanity. Let them know what the proceeds will go towards. When we do the silent auction for the band at the local high school, we print up a catalog for the auction and companies buy space in the catalog for advertising. With that money we procure items to auction off.
