Whats a Mystery Shopper?

  • My friend is applying for a job as a mystery shopper. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

  • Answer:

Here is a really good site to read. It explains what a Mystery Shopper does and why. It also goes into why many scammers pose as people hiring Mystery Shoppers and how to tell scams from legitimate jobs: http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/secretshopperscams.php For more info on how not to be scammed: http://www.snopes.com/fraud/employment/shopper.asp I hope this is a legitimate offer but those are much rarer than scam offers. I wish her luck. (If any of the answers you get are helpful to you, please choose a Best Answer to keep them alive so they can help others too.)

OMG! Please stay away, I mean FAR AWAY from these people and websites about Mystery Shoppers! They will send you a check and you are supposed to deposit it all in your bank account. Then they will ask you to send them a portion of it back. It is a fake check. The bank will cash it because at first they don't know that it is. In a couple of days the bank will call you and tell you that you must pay up the total amount of the check. Even though you didn't know that it wasn't a legal check you will be held responsible for it all. My mother always taught me from the time I was little- if it sounds to good to be true IT PROBABLY IS!!! Please don't believe them no matter what they say. I have not been suckered into this but I have seen it alot on the news of people that did. Lost thousands of dollars!

A mystery shopper does several different things. A large chain store might hire one to shop in their stores to see how helpful the employees are, how clean the store is, how well stocked the shelves are, etc. In that case, the shopper is usually told to go to store location X and spend amount Y (or given a list of products to buy.) Sometimes, when given a certain amount to spend, they're allowed to keep what they buy as partial pay. Manufactures use them too. For example, Coca-Cola might have one go around to local stores to check on pricing, displays, and/or promotions. Different Mystery Shopper companies do different things, but in general, the above applies to most of them. Peace - desk

In many cases, a mystery shopper is hired to compare prices. For example, Target will send shoppers to Wal-Mart to see if there prices competive.
