Answer:
Here's a couple of places to go and they both have websites so you can look before you go: Gentlemen’s Tonic in Mayfair is a place truly befitting The Arbuturian ethos; it’s discreetly exclusive, tucked away in a quiet backwater of Mayfair, gentlemanly as the name suggests, sophisticated and thoroughly of its time. It’s what one might call a gentlemen’s grooming salon, or for the less romantic, a barbershop. But they not only offer hairdressing from stylists such as the venerable Chris Foster (winner of the British Men’s Hairdressing awards), they also offer a full range of professional massages and treatments, and even a traditional shave using a cutthroat razor. They balance the old and new effortlessly, merging together the image of the classic British gent with his modern, demanding counterpart. It pulls an eclectic crowd, from suited Mayfair lawyers to Soho trendies, the odd celebrity and the crème of Savile Row. It’s a bit like a private members club for hairdressing and grooming treatments. Dark polished floors, leather couches, pastel green walls and a complimentary Bloody Mary all go towards the feeling of utter tranquillity, and I haven’t even got to the haircut yet. In fact I purposely arrive early so that I can sit in the leather armchair in their serene waiting area, sipping my drink and browsing the latest travel reviews in Conde Naste. Each stylist has their own private haircutting booth; gone are the days of being lined up in front of a mirror with several other men, having to listen to people talk about football scores you care nothing about. Each booth is complemented by a leather barber’s chair of a traditional design, a flat screen television with a choice of digital channels, and a range of sample treatments and hair gels to try out once your cut is complete. If your average hairdresser offers an economy service, here we’re talking first class, Michelin-star hairdressing. It may cost slightly more than the usual high-street clipper-shaving conveyor belt that you find in most barbers these days, but the added price is well worth this little escape from our busy lives. Metrosexual, I hear you cry? Perhaps, but the cmarket for men’s grooming products is booming, and GT Mayfair have recognised this, stocking a wide range of own-branded and niche brand items, from luxurious shaving creams and body scrubs to skin onditioners and hair gels. So if you’re looking for a few moments respite in the lap of luxury, Gentlemen’s Tonic is just the place.
