How to get from Philadelphia to Toronto?

If you could have one meal in Toronto, what would it be?

  • Going on a roadtrip and passing through Toronto. Ideally, I'd like to have something local and memorable, something I can't get anywhere else, but I'm not aware of any traditional Toronto foods. I'm having a philly cheesesteak at Pat's in Philadelphia, lobster sandwich at Louie's Alive & Kicking Lobsters in Boston, raw oysters and new england clam chowder at J's Oyster shack in Portland, poutine in Quebec, etc. My trip is basically scenic routes to and from great local food. :) Price isn't a big concern, but nothing too fancy (i.e. white cloth course meals).

  • Answer:

The CN Tower is overpriced tourist swill. My first answer would be high-end sushi at Hiro or Kaji, but I'm not sure that either "define" Toronto. Toronto is a melting pot (much like New York) minus one definitive food item. If someone was visiting for one meal that I felt defined who "we" are in Toronto (opting out of the cynical route of chains run amok), I'd opt for Indian, Chinese, or Vietnamese. Maybe Dim Sum in Chinatown. I agree that if you're having poutine you're better off having it in Quebec (it's been my experience they do it better).

As a former chef who worked in Toronto ans still lives here, we have many local dishes, but mainly our ethnic diversity is what make T.O unique, so you might look at one of our ethnic foods you have never experienced, like Ethiopian, Korean or we have a number of Arabic cuisines, Iranian, Lebanese and others, even Caribbean like Jamaican, Trinidadian are something special here.

You should definately go to the Harbord Bakery. It's amazing. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/10/182534/restaurant/The-Annex/Harbord-Bakery-Toronto

I don't know about the local food there but I know the CN tower is a very memorable place to eat. The restaurant rotates on top of the tower, one turn in 60 minutes. It gives you a beautiful view of downtown Toronto and the lake. The food is excellent but pricey. Hope this helps.
