Car stereo problems... help!?

  • My car stereo works fine when the key is in the ignition & the car is not running but as soon as you start the engine it won't work. Now & then it'll play a song or 2 before dying but usually it dies as soon as you start the engine. Help! I'm clueless

  • Answer:

I've seen this occasionally when the vehicle's alternator is malfunctioning. If the alternator is generating an output voltage that's too high (over 15v or so) then the head unit will often shut down. The easiest way to test it is to check the car's voltage at the battery, using a multimeter, while the engine is running. If the system voltage is over 15 volts, have the alternator serviced.

Other answers

Does the stereo work with the ignition in the 'on' position? ie, the ignition lights are on? If so, there may be a fault with your ignition switch - if not, your stereo has been wired incorrectly. In addition, many stereo units with DVD capability won't work in DVD mode unless the handbrake is on.
