What is the best HD Radio Head Unit?

Changing the Head Unit..... (radio)?

  • I'm driving a 1988 Crown Victoria and the head unit seems to be bad. The system is nowhere near as loud as it should and the volume control barely works, the sound crackles, fades in and out, or the volume will skyrocket out of nowhere. I don't think any of the speakers or blown or anything, so would buying a new head unit fix this problem or should i get a whole new system?

  • Answer:

If the speakers are stock I would replace them also, because the higher power will cause them to blow especially if they are older and have been exposed to the elements a long time...

Most likely yea. It sounds like some of the internals on the stereo are just old, worn and possibly blown. If a speaker is blown you would know as the sound coming out of them would be horrible. If the sound is randommly going up and down but still sounds decent then I would expect a deck failure. Does it crackle all the time or only randomly? If randomly then I would say deck However, there may also be some exposed wires running from the speakers to the deck that could cause a problem, so if you take the deck out take some time to check connections. It doesn't hurt to update the ol head unit either.

If there were some exposed speaker wires anywhere the wire would short out and no longer work, so that is totally not your problem. What you are describing to me sounds like your stereo has certainly seen some better days. Look into an Alpine deck, or a Pioneer deck. If you want something that plays DVD's and has GPS then go with either Kenwood or Pioneer since the screens on Alpine are kind of blurry compaired to Pioneer and Kenwood. But for only music quality then go with Alpine or Eclipse. Replace that stereo and your volume problem is fixed and should fix the crackling sound as well. If after you replace the stereo you still have the crackling problem then you will want to check your speaker wires at the speakers and make sure that they are on there good.

Well you can start with the head unit and if that doesn't fix it. then you can start replacing the speakers.
