Answer:
Well, ultimately, you need power if your goal is to annoy your neighbors. The most common mistake a lot of novices make is to just go by the power claims printed on the amp or sub and on the box it came in, and accept that the flea market amps with a lot of chrome and lights advertising a million watts for $100 will put out a lot of power. The problem with that is most lower quality brands advertise only peak power ratings, and peak power ratings aren't ratings at all. They are virtually random numbers used to sell amps. You need to look closer -- find the rms power ratings, and even then some low end brands are less than honest about those too. Leaving you with the price tag. If one amp for $100 says it's 1000w and another for $200 says it's 1000w there's probably a good reason for it. Subs work about the same. The fact is, a $100 piece of equipment from a respectable brand with modest power claims probably has more potential than a $75 piece of equipment from a no-name brand with astronomical power claims. When it comes to bass, besides equipment, a lot of people forget about the enclosure. To get the most out of any subwoofer requires a well designed and constructed box. Just grabbing any off-the-shelf box for a given sub will most likely mean limited performance from the sub. In some cases, if you know what you're looking for you can find a decent box that way, but most high quality (high output) subs will require a custom design and therefore custom built box to work their best. So -- For TWO good subs, good amp, good box, adequate wiring -- $400-600 for a low-mid quality set up. $800-1000 for something pretty nice. To go high end the dollars can get REAL big. Then if you want a decent head unit, full range speakers (just fronts) that have any chance of keeping up with a pair of 12's, and an amp to power them you'd have another $300-500. Those guesstimates would be not including any labor (doing the install yourself).
