How to power car subwoofers in home?
-
Ok so ive heard a lot of debate on this subject, people saying its pointless to bring them into the home, well i use my audio system for JUST music so this is what i want and i wont be persuaded away from that. Okay, so i want to power 2 x 12'' Sony X-Plod subwoofers (1300 peak each, 380 rms each). There are two ways i hear i can go about doing this, one: buy a PSU (computer power suppy) to power the amp, rather than just directly powering the subs or.. Two: buy a professional dj amp to power them dirrectly (avioding the use of the car amp). Any suggestions or people who have done this. OTHER INFO: Amp= 1500 peak, mono, subs = 2 x 12" sony x-plod (wattage above). Thanks for any help offered, any questions for me post em! -John

Answer:
when i was in school my neighbor ahs a system hooked up in his apartment. Now its probably wasnt the safest way but it worked. He had a battery connected to a battery charger and had that on continous i suppose. then the amp and headunit were connected to the battery. sounded good, but again probly not the safest bet. it lasted all year at school, and no one died.

Ive actually done this before.. Just get a 12 volt DC transformer. If you dont know what this is, it is that black box that you plug into the wall that alot of devices use, such as a home telephone. This will convert the 110 ac from your house to 12v dc, which is the same as your car battery. Just hook the positive and negative to the amp, and then also run the positive to the remote antenna location on the amp, which will make it turn on.

I have a set up on my garage all you need a power inverter you plug this in to the wall and convert house power supply to 12 volts which is what you need to power the amp you can get this on any auto parts i hope this help:)

The computer power supply will not be able to keep up with that amp. Use a home audio amp or d.j. amp, it will be a lot easier and probably cheaper in the end.

You will need to get a switching power supply from radio shack. I got and you wire it up to your amp. It converts your a/c household current to dc current for use on the amp.

A computer PSU doesn't have near the amperage capable to run such a system. At most a PC-PSU can deliver about 17 Amperes. A car amplifier that pushes 760 watts RMS (380 x 2) will require at least 40 amperes. This will cost over $200 just for the supply. http://www.powerstream.com/low-noise-high-power.htm _________________________ Unrelated but important.... The thing is, people get confused in the real purpose of a cap. It is not used to cure or prevent dimming lights nor will it change the way the system sounds (both are misconceptions). To undertsand the purpose you need to understand how they work. A cap does it's best to keep the voltage at a certain level, but if the voltage changes so will the cap voltage. The cap just makes the change smoother. The diming light syndrome isn't a voltage issue but rather a current (amperage) drop. The voltage simply follows what the current does. A cap does not help this situation at all. A cap doesn't provide more power nor does it try to correct it. A cap is perfect for a noisy voltage line or if the car has fast, erratic voltage spikes/drops. This is why caps are used in AC to DC power supplies as they are used to smooth out the DC ripple for a more smooth DC output. The ONLY cure for dimming lights is a more hefty amperage source, the alternator. The REAL powerplant of the car is the alternator. The ONLY purpose of the battery is to start the car and run the accessories with the engine off, nothing else.
