Alpine Type R subwoofers blew?
-
I baught 2 12" Type R Alpine subwoofers ( the latest model) with a 1000watt Orion XTR PRO 1000 amp (100 watts RMS @ 1 ohm) from an aquantance. He mentioned that he got the subs about a year ago. A week after installing them in my car one of the subs blew (I had the amp gain 3/4 way up, low-pass set at 250HZ, bass boost off). I replaced the sub with another type R (brand new). Today, three weeks later, the other sub (the other used one) blew. This time the gain of the amp was only half way up, bass boost off, low-pass stayed at 250Hz. I'm lost at what the problem is. Whren installing the first replacement, I double checked that the wiring was correct. I even upgraded the wiring from 18GA to 14GA high quality wiring. I understand the basics of car audio and installed a whole new speaker system in my car down to the wiring. I'm not a saint, I blast music every time I'm in the car, but I figured the subs could take it, since their rated at 500rms each and plenty of people overpower these subs with no problems. Am I doing something wrong, or are these subs known for blowing out after a year or so (I've read some customer reviews that had similar problems)?

Answer:
Maybe you're clipping your amp or your deck is sending clipped signals to your amp. That's how most subs get killed. The gain isn't about having it 1/4, 3/8, 3/4, etc, go to this website (http://www.bcae1.com/gaincon2.htm) to learn more about the gain control and how to set it. Or your low pass filter is too high which could be why they're dying, set it to 120hz or lower. 100-250hz is usually considered midbass, generally you want your speakers to play these frequencies and not your sub. In cars, people usually set it at 80hz, some set it at 63hz. Turn on the subsonic filter if your amp has it. There are people who run Type Rs close to double It's rms without having a problem, just set things right.

you need to let the subs break in first if they are brand new. alot of people say you dont have to but if you blast them brand new they will shake something loose or tear because they are still stiff. idk how many ohms you have it wired up to but if you dont match the ohm to what the model the Rs are (4ohm or 2ohm) you can damage them. i got 2 12" type Rs with 2 alpine amps one for each sub both wired to a capacitor. its extremely hard to blow type Rs when powered to 500w rms and up to about 750 rms they still beat fine. unless your not letting them break in or your friend did something wrong when he had them originally. ive known people who have had type Rs for 3 years and they still hit hard. id stay with Rs just get them new and dont be too harsh on them for a couple weeks or so. with my setup and my Rs i can barely see when i drive cuz they hit so hard. good luck with everything

The 12'' Type R's suck. I had four of them hooked up to a 1000 watt alpine amp and you think alpine subs hooked up to an alpine amp no problems right, wrong. I also had a professional approve my wiring and 2 weeks later one blew, and shortly after that 2 more went, now they all sound like crap, i suggest getting totally different subs, luckily i got mine for free from a friend selling his car.

Had 2 Alpine 12"S with 1000w and blew them but they were covered under warranty, The guy at the store is cool and gave me new ones on the spot, he said they were having some problems with the glue. If I remember it was the spyder that let go and they rattled like heck. One blew then the other one a week or two later. This was 2? years ago.

Tyler = WRONG--- dude stop spreading myths. You do not need to break in subs!!!!!!!!!! Lordy, the myth spreaders on here are ridic! Aliskero--- first off, the gain is NOT a volume knob. It is to match the voltage coming from the source unit (your head unit/deck) to the amp. You are pushing the limits of those things. What kind of box are they in? Do you have the bass jacked up on the head unit? 250hz is too high for the low pass, but its not going to blow a sub! The difference between 18 gauge and 14 gauge wiring wont make a difference either. That amp may be underrated, and is putting out even more power! (older orion products were known for this) You may just be pushing them too hard. Perhaps its time for some higher power handling subs? If you are going to drive around playing rap music full volume for long periods, get some beefier subs to give yourself some error room. Back off the gain a bit too. So typical of newbs to want ear rattling bass, so they just jack up the gain which usually has bad results... On a side note, I have heard of some issues with these subs, the surrounds coming unglued, etc.
