What size anl fuse do I use?

What size fuse should i have?

  • I am awaiting the arrival on my new amp and fuse holder but am still a little unsure of what size fuse i should use. The fuse holder is an anl type. I will have about 25 feet of 1/0 gauge wire from the battery to the amp. i will have the amp running at 2500 watts rms. So what size should i get? also could you explain how you cam up with your answer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

Your fuse should be slightly larger than the total of all your fuses on the amp or amps. For example if your amp has three 30 amp fuses, then you would want a 100 amp fuse.

Most amp manufacturers spec the max wattage at 14.4VDC. Usually, the amp is only pulling a fraction of that, but under extreme volumes, it will peak pretty close to 2500/14.4 = 174 amps. Never should it pull more than that. The fuse by the battery is to protect the wire. #1/0 is only good for 150A. So, a 250A fuse would not protect it. Put in a 200A fuse and run #3/0 would be the proper sizing. But you've got more issues than that. First of all, your alternator probably doesn't put out an extra 174A to support that amp. Upgrading to a high current alternator would be a wise choice. Another thing that would help is wiring another battery inline close to your amp.

simple way to look @ it every 10 rms uses about 1 amp so 2500 watts rms would use 250 amp fuse

I = Amperage aka current VA = Volt Amp aka watt V = Volt the formula is I = (VA x 1.2) / V you should assume that your wiring won't be opperating at 100% efficiency the entire time so thats why you use about 80% efficiency (1.2) Assuming you are using a 12V battery, I = (2500 x 1.2) / 12 I = 250 so you should get a 250 amp fuse.

That guy alex is right I have my 2000rms amp on a 150 amp fuse which my amp only needs 140 so you would look for something around 150 - 200 because it will most likely never run at its peak.
