How many RMS does my 2 12" jbl subs have?

I want these jbl gti subs and they are 6ohm, 700 rms, and i have a amp jbl 2400 watts?

  • so this amp says for the RMS Power Rating: 4 ohms: 1750 watts x 1 chan. 2 ohms: 2400 watts x 1 chan. these subs are 700 rms and 4000 watts peak, now i am trying to get the right amp and i want the subs to hit as hard as they can with out problems so what confuses me is the 6ohms ? i thought the lower the ohm was the better it will be so i am confused, if anyone can help ill apreciate it.

  • Answer:

Low or high ohms (impedance) has no relation to good or bad. Subwoofer voice coils are offered in different configurations only to increase versatility when matching them up with an amp. The W12GTI mkII is 700w rms, and has a dual 6 ohm voice coil. The GTO24001 is 1750@4 and 2400@2. With a pair of dual 6's you have 3 possible wiring options 1) all coils parallel, total impedance 0.67 ohms. This option is not usable with that amp as it is not stable below 2 ohms. 2) all coils series, total impedance of 24 ohms. This option would reduce the power of the amp to just 300w or so and would not be a good choice. 3) coils series, subs parallel, total impedance of 6 ohms. This is your only logical option. Power out of the amp should be just about right for those subs. Assuming the power of the amp going from 4 ohms to 8 ohms would decrease at the same rate as it does going from 2 ohms to 4 ohms it should give your right around 1500 at 6. The wiring would look just like this, although this shows 4 ohm subs: http://m.seimg.net/product/img/subwoofer_wiring/2_subs_DVC_4_ohm_mono_variation1.jpg
