How to install a car cd player?

How hard is it to install a car cd player?

  • okay sooo im a girl......and i just got a car.....but it needs a cd player installed... its a 94 mercury cougar.......how hard is it? is it something i could do myself. where can i get instructions, and stuff?

  • Answer:

It's easy. I've installed stereos in every car I have owned. That's like 10 different cars. Go to someplace like Circuit City or Best Buy, get an in-dash CD player, and an installation kit specific to your car from Scoche or someone like them. They make them for all kinds of cars. Follow the directions. I would not recommend that you let them install it. Circuit City did a crappy job with my Neon, and I actually had to take it out and reinstall it myself correctly. Maybe some people have good luck with them, but not me. Crutchfield.com is a great place to find out what fits your car and exactly what you will need to install it. Plus they have a tech line. Just because you're a girl doesn't mean you can't do this. Another way is to add on a CD changer. That way you don't have to take out or install the in-dash unit, but you can have the CD changer under the seat or in the trunk. I had one of those, too. They're easy to install. I transferred mine from car to car 3 times. Bottom line, follow the directions exactly or you will have trouble.

in all reality, the hardest thing is taking out the old stereo from your car.. after that it's usually just matching up wires to a harness and plugging that in, re-attaching the antenna, and fitting your stereo to a metal and plastic surround so it stays in place in your dashboard.. if this sounds like a bit much, just start talking about your problem in front of guy friends at work/home/school/wherever.. one of them will easily know how to do it and will offer to do it for you.. take em' up on the offer and watch, so next time (or if you want to pull it out lter for your next car) you'll be set.. sexist answer i know, but totally true.. or pay money for a pro to do it *blaaaah!*

Like the others said, if you don't have any experience it will be a bit of a struggle. Overall, the job isn't that hard. You just need to know where each wire goes and what it hooks into. If you need help with installing a car stereo system Circuit City can help. They offer a set of instructions as to how to install the radio and what tools you need. They even offer free help over the phone if you need it. Here is the url to the instructions I mentioned: http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/cat/-13089/edOid/105531/rpem/ccd/lookLearn.do

If you don't know anything about electronics or pulling cars apart, I would avoid it.

if you have no experience with cars, you wont be able to do it. i've taken advanced auto and some other classes and it's still a bit of a struggle for me

Don't listen to "Me Again," You don't need a CD changer and "special, specific kits." Usually, CD Players have a sticker on them that say what the different colored wires mean, and all you have to do is match them up. Sometimes, some guess and check with the wires is needed as far as hooking up the speaker wires correctly. I had a 94 Ford Thunderbird, which is basically a 94 Cougar aside from the name, so I know exactly what you are looking at. For your first time, I would suggest having a professional do it, and request to watch it get installed if you are interested in learning how to do it yourself. I say this because if you did it yourself, things can go wrong. It can be very frustrating. I've had friends pay no attention to their ground wires/leads and start their entire electircal system on fire before.

Being a woman has little to do with it other than most women don't have any desire to fool around with stereos. They just want to hear them, and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't recommend trying to learn by yourself. As another person already mentioned, www.crutchfield.com is a great place for a do it yourselfer to buy a cd player. With your purchase they will send you everything needed to install your cd player plus step by step intructions and any tools needed that you wouldn't already have at home. Plus, their technical help line is always there if you get stuck. But my honest advice is that you shouldn't try to do it yourself if you haven't watched someone else do it before. Have it installed or have a friend with experience do it while you help/watch. Good luck.
